Finding the right wedding gown has been and will always be one of the most important tasks a bride will encounter while preparing for her wedding day. Finding the right gown can be a demanding task but figuring out how to highlight that choice on your wedding day is a whole other problem that many brides overlook.
When a bride meets me for the first time, usually at her trial, she already has a good idea of the makeup and hair look she wants for her big day. This is good and something I encourage. She normally has her gown chosen, her head piece chosen and I’m shown both items and given a detailed explanation of her wedding theme, her wedding colours and so on. Sometimes when I’m shown the style of her gown and the accessories that will go with that gown they all complement each other perfectly and I completely agree with the bride’s wedding makeup and hair choice. Sadly other times it can be a complete mismatch of styles and I find myself trying to talk the bride out of the makeup and hair look she was considering for fear it will all end up a hot mismatched mess on her big day.
Let me show you examples of those hits and misses.
A bride chooses an elegant classic vintage wedding gown like this….
….and asks for makeup and hair like this…..extreme high fashion makeup and hair does not accentuate her choice of gown but rather takes our eye away from her beautiful gown and onto her face. These two styles do not match.
Or a bride chooses a sexy gown like this…..
…and asks for makeup and hair like this….beautiful yes, but the gown above screams sexy, adventurous and bold and this makeup and hair screams “sweet and innocent.”
To give you an idea of what good overall styling looks like, here are some examples of brides who have matched the style of gown to their makeup and hair choices perfectly.
Bride Style Hits!
This bride chose a romantic flowing gown, it screams feminine innocence and it’s perfectly styled with clean classic makeup and flowing effortless hair. It all works together to show off her gown and her beauty.
This bride has a romantic lace classic gown which has been styled with soft makeup and a braided updo to keep the look current yet timeless. This is a great example of mixing old with new.
This bride chose a pink feminine gown which she had accentuated with romantic pink and brown makeup tones and matched that with a sophisticated modern take on the ballerina bun. The gown and her natural beauty are everything here.
This bride took a different approach to the typical vintage look but made it work. Her hair is a modern take on the finger wave yet still very free flowing and relaxed. Her makeup concentrates on the eyes and makes them the focal point. Her skin is matte in finish with a soft contoured cheek. Rather than having the typical vintage red lip she has chosen a soft peachy pink lip. This look is all about keeping those eyes front and centre yet letting us know without a doubt this is a vintage inspired look.
From all my years in this business I can tell you that makeup and hair are a very personal thing to any woman and makeup and hair for a bride is not only personal but an essential part of how she will ultimately feel about herself on her wedding day. Her gown, her jewelry, her shoes all work together with her makeup and hair. To really bring fashion and beauty together, brides should look at their hair and makeup options at the same time they are considering the style of their wedding gown. One does not work without the other.
