Out of all the lovely brides I’ve worked with over the years I can name only a handful that ever asked me this question….“Does the makeup and hair style I want actually suit me?”
Oh how I wish more brides asked this question! I have to say that many of my brides are very aware of what suits them and we see things very similarly and it all works out well but then there are those brides who seem to have a vision that I simply do not agree with. There can be obvious reasons for this, say for example, I have a bride who wants to wear her hair down in loose curls for her hot and sticky outside July wedding. She insists her curls “must stay” no matter how hot and humid it is or how thin and limp her hair may be. 😉 It’s so frustrating when I know for certain I could create a better look for that bride that would make her so much happier. There isn’t anything more frustrating to a makeup and hair artist than a bride who won’t listen to reason.
Just this past weekend my bride and I were on the exact same page and we were from the moment we met at her trial. Ah, it was bridal beauty heaven! She knew what she wanted and it was a perfect match to what I thought would best suit her. Bliss. At times like that I’m relaxed knowing full well when I get finished she’s going to look the best she’s ever looked before in her life. Not being conceited here…just stating the truth. When my bride and I are on the same page miracles happen. When we aren’t it’s a struggle.
Here’s the thing I think brides-to-be need to consider when choosing a makeup/hair artist for their wedding day beauty. First and foremost, you are hiring someone to bring your bridal beauty dreams to reality. That’s pretty straight forward. So what does that mean? That means you pay someone to make you look the way you want to look, period. But here’s the clincher ….if you’ve done your job right and have actually picked someone who is well experienced and that you trust (if you don’t trust that person, find someone else) why not ask the question, “Does the makeup and hair style I want actually suit me?” You might find it does, you might find it doesn’t or you might find your artist wants to make a little tweak that you hadn’t considered and it could end up being a better look for you in the end. You’ve paid him/her, get their advice.
Most brides ask their friends or their mother for advice. I get that. I have a great relationship with my mom and trust her completely but she isn’t a professional makeup and hair artist who works every week with brides and who probably sees things in a way no friend or mother ever could. Just something to consider….
- Hire the best you can afford. (If I’ve said this once I’ve said it a million times!)
- Hire someone you trust. (this is more important than most brides realize…until their wedding day)
- Soak up your artist’s vast experience and use every last bit of their experience you can get your hands on!
- Ask the question every bridal makeup/hair artist wants to hear….” Does the makeup and hair style I want actually suit me?”
- Watch the magic happen.
